Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

Despite the fact that it is practically discontinued, Winamp still lives on as one of the most popular media players on the market. It offers high quality playback, support for plug-ins, online radio broadcasts and much more. It is available for Windows and Mac OS X and it is still absolutely free. You can install it on a Mac in just a few seconds and launch it right away.

In terms of appearance, Winamp's Mac OS X version is different from the Windows version. The user interface has a cleaner design, which makes the application easier to control. When launched for the first time, Winamp will offer to import the contents of your Music folders and from iTunes. Imported files are listed in the central region of the interface and you can add them to a playing queue, on the right side of the interface. You can also switch between different libraries and playlists, on the left side of the window.

The application allows you to add one or more folders to a watchlist, in the general settings menu. As a result, any files you place in those folders will be imported automatically. Besides switching between libraries and playlists, on the left side of the window, you can also access the media contents on external devices. Furthermore, the application allows you to copy the files to and from your connected device, without opening a Finder window.

Pros

The player has a clean and efficient design. It can import media files automatically, from one or more watch folders. It can also recognize external devices and their contained media files.

Cons

The player is a bit too simple, compared to its Windows counterpart. If you wish to enjoy your favorite songs in a comfortable manner, then Winamp is what you need.
