A media player is among the first things a user will download when his operating system is freshly installed. Without such a program, it would be quite difficult to listen to your favorite songs or radio stations. Regardless if you are a novice or a veteran user, you have surely heard of Winamp. It has been available for the public for a long time. Since then, new skins, plug-ins and of course, new versions were created, keeping the program fresh and up to date. After all this time, Winamp is still the first choice of any user, due to the playback's quality, robust file management system and other features.
Winamp is free and it can be installed, in less than a minute, even on low end computers. During the installation process, you will encounter a few options to install a Winamp toolbar on your browser and other additional services. You can opt to install or decline them just by clicking radio buttons or check boxes. When the installation process is complete, you may choose one of the software's basic skins (Classic, Modern or Bento), associate it with certain audio files and more.
Winamp has come a long way since being a simple program for playing audio files. There are over 20.000 skins available and more than 450 plug-ins. It features a well built file management system and various features for burning media to CDs or DVDs or synchronizing files with mobile devices, so it is safe to say that Winamp is one of the most popular media players on the market, if not THE most popular.
The familiar controls window, equalizer and playlist are still the backbone of Winamp's interface. The larger window beneath them consists of a built-in web browser which will make it easy to find new songs, a visualization viewer, video player and the media library. They are found under separate tabs and you can switch from one to another at any time. The media library offers a complete set of features and online services. They are listed on the left side of the window and you can access anything from recently added or played tracks, to lyrics services and more.
While playing an audio file, you will find all the information you need about the artist in the Now Playing section of the media library. The information includes a biography, photos, videos, news and more. You will also find a list of songs, by the same artist. Providing you with this information is not all that Winamp can do. You will find options for adding the songs to the queue, buying them or buying ringtones.
Add-ons, plug-ins and skins can be downloaded and installed immediately from the media library. If you access the Add-ons section, you will find a web page with most downloaded, top rated, recently modified and other types of skins, visualizations, online services and more. If you can not find something that you like, you can use the search function, above the web page.
Winamp performs well on any computers, even older ones. There are over 450 plug-ins and 20.000+ skins available, so the software will not leave anything to be desired, in terms of customization. The rich media library and built-in web browser will help you with much more than organizing your audio files or finding new ones.
The video playback is a bit choppy, and the full-speed CD burning is available only in the Winamp Pro version. Organization, customization and, of course, quality are just a few of the aspects in which Winamp excels. It provides you with everything you need and more.
